Court Interpreter Ethics: Exploring Scope of Practice
Live webinar on Thursday, April 25th 5:30–6:30 pm (CDT)
Presenter: Ernest Niño-Murcia
Approved for 1 CEU from IA Court. Note: The CEU can only be earned by attending the live session.
Court interpreters’ code of ethics looks straightforward on paper but can be challenging to interpret and apply in a real-life environment where some parties may not understand the bounds of an interpreter’s professional duties. This session will first explore ethical guidelines regarding interpreter scope of practice before presenting and analyzing scenarios in which an interpreter could be asked to perform tasks that fall outside of their scope of practice, with a focus on strategies for applying the code of ethics and communicating its limits to stakeholders.
Ernest Niño-Murcia is a freelance legal interpreter and translator based in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in Anthro-Linguistics. As a state and federally-certified court interpreter, he has interpreted legal proceedings and prepared translations, transcriptions and expert witness reports/testimony for clients in the private and public sectors. Outside of court, he has interpreted for public figures such as House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Governor George Pataki and Senator Bernie Sanders. He has presented to groups of attorneys, judges and court reporters about court interpreter issues.
