Webinar: IA Court Interpreter Compensation

New administrative directive on court interpreter and translator compensation

Live webinar on April 11, 2017, from 6:30-7:30pm (Central)

Free 1-hr webinar provided by IITA and the Iowa Judicial Branch on the new administrative directive on court interpreter and translator compensation, which replaces the original directive issued in 2007.  Webinar participants should review the 2016 administrative directive prior to the webinar.  It is available on the Iowa courts’ website at: http://www.iowacourts.gov/Administration/Court_Interpreters/Compensation/

Description: The webinar presenters will be:  John Goerdt, Deputy State Court Administrator, and Dave Ewert, Deputy Director of the Office of Professional Regulation.  They will explain key changes in compensation policies including, but not limited to: (1) exceptions to standard hourly fees for court interpreters, (2) standard translator fees and exceptions to the standard fees, (3) interpreter agency compensation, (4) minimum interpreter time, (5) reimbursable travel time and expenses, (6) payment on cancellation of proceedings, and (7) fee claims.  This webinar is approved for one hour of interpreter continuing education.

IITA will provide a Certificate of Attendance to all who attend the live webinar.


John Goerdt received an M.A. from Marquette University and a J.D. from the Syracuse University College of Law.  He worked as a staff attorney and research project director at the National Center for State Courts in Virginia from 1987 until 1998, when he joined the Iowa Administrative Office Courts as the Judicial Branch Planner.  He was promoted to the Deputy State Court Administrator position in January 2007.  He has staffed the state court administrator’s Court Interpreter Policies Advisory Committee since 2002, and served on the Executive Board of the National Consortium for Language Access in the Courts from 2008 to 2013.  He’s a member of the National Association for Court Management and Iowa State Bar Association.  

Dave Ewert is the Assistant Director for admissions for the Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) in Des Moines.  He is in charge of interpreter testing, training, continuing education, and discipline.  Dave also administers attorney admissions, including the bar examination, admission on motion, and house counsel registration.  Finally, he staffs the Iowa Supreme Court’s bar conduct subcommittee, which addresses various attorney admission and discipline issues.   Dave started working as a staff attorney for the Iowa Supreme Court in 1986.  He was Deputy Clerk of the Supreme Court from 1987 until 1992, and then served as chief staff attorney from 1992 until 2008, when he joined OPR.  He is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law.  Dave has twice been named national chair of the Council of Bar Admission Administrators.

On the morning of the webinar, registrants will be emailed step-by-step instructions for accessing the webinar, which will be via GoToMeeting. Make sure you allow sufficient time (about 15 minutes) to follow these instructions, which may include checking to see if you have the latest JAVA and running a system check of your audio settings.
